Butet Manurung; Big Dedication For Nation

Butet Manurung

Several weeks ago, I watched a talk show program in Metro TV. I got lots of amazing things when I watched the program. The topic was about great heroine in Indonesia. Perhaps, some of us have heard about this woman whom I want to talk about. She is Butet Saur Marlinang Manurung. She is an amazing woman who fight for education in rural Indonesia. In my opinion, fighting for education in rural country is not simple work for women due to the place condition there. However, it is something that she wants to do from the heart. Furthermore, Butet has achieved many awards because of her hard working. It proves that she has been serious about this work that may be can endanger herself. Lastly, her story life in rural Indonesia inspires many women to do more in the future. Here is a short story about Butet Manurung.

Launching The Jungle Book
 by Butet Manurung
Butet Manurung was Hobo descent. She was born in Jakarta on February 21, 1972. Her story life began when she saw an advertisement in one of Indonesia popular newspaper. At that time, she has been bored with her job as a guide in Taman Nasional in 1999. Hence, she felt that she had to sign up as an alternative education facilitator in Jambi and this was her fate. At the first seven months, she only observed Orang Rimba's culture and habit. After that, she began giving them lessons. At first, she was refused by them as they thought that studying is only for Orang Terang (a term for an outsider). Butet, nevertheless, never gave up although she faced many obstacles there. Fortunately, Butet who is optimistic and never gives up succeeded in convincing Orang Rimba that education can protect them from fraud. Moreover, she taught Orang Rimba in unique and different methods as they had never got  education before. Because of her teaching method, she received "The Man and Biosphere Award" from LIPI-UNESCO in 2001. Thereunto, after 3 years, she got awards again, that is "Heroes of asia Award" from Time Magazine in 2004 and "Woman of The Year" from Anteve in 2004. There are still a lot of achievements that she gets.

Butet and Orang Rimba
Her life is always interesting to be told. Besides that, her struggling for education in Jambi is worthy to be emulated. It does not simply mean that we have to stay in a forest like Butet. However, we must imitate her spirit to show her concern for education in Indonesia. Fighting for education is not only education department students' job, yet all of us as Indonesia people. Thus, keep spirit and keep on learning guys!
